Unlike many natural cosmetics, Spica Organics makeup contain no Carmine. Due to the cool pink and red hues it yields, Carmine is commonly used in traditional (petroleum-based) and natural cosmetics, colored drinks and yogurts, perfumes and some vitamins. While its brilliant crimson red pigment may look appealing, its effects on the body are not.
Obtained from the aluminum salt of carminic acid, Carmine originates from some scale insects such as the Cochineal beetle. While this buggy extract is an organic compound, Carmine can cause severe allergic reactions. It may also trigger severe headaches, dizziness, as well as skin, eye, respiratory tract and digestive tract irritation. It also suspected to be an environmental toxin. In addition to banning Carmine, Spica Organics is also 100% Vegan. It’s also made without gluten, lactose, artificial colors and artificial fragrances.
